The family of David G. Murray is saddened to announce his passing. Beloved husband, brother, uncle, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Dave leaves behind a legacy of hard work, adventure, and incredible stories.
Dave, the second of five children, was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on May 25, 1944 to Andy and Phyllis Murray. He was raised in Southern Saskatchewan alongside his siblings Elaine (Dale, deceased), Bonnie (Gary), Dennis (Linda), and Wendy (Bob). He will be deeply missed by all his siblings.
At the young age of 16, Dave met the love of his life, Patsy. They were married in 1964 and celebrated their 60th anniversary in 2024. Together, Dave and Patsy raised two sons, David Wade (Laura) and Gregory Todd (Pam). During the late 1960s, they began their family while Dave worked as a roughneck throughout Saskatchewan’s oil patch. In 1970, Dave’s career took the family overseas, beginning a remarkable life of international adventure. Over the years, Dave and Patsy called many places home, including: Algeria, South Africa, Portugal, Spain, Trinidad, Saint Martin, Brazil, Las Vegas, British Columbia, and Regina.
Through hard work, determination, and an incredible knowledge of the oil and gas industry Dave found himself overseeing and commissioning one of the world’s largest offshore semi-submersible oil drilling platforms, the Erik Raude. From a young roughneck in Saskatchewan to overseeing one of the most sophisticated offshore drilling operations in the world, Dave left a remarkable legacy in the industry. His career continued to take him around the globe to Scotland, Cuba, Mumbai, New Zealand, Central Africa, Texas, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Norway, Congo, and countless other places. His career gave him an extraordinary collection of experiences and an endless supply of stories.
Although Dave officially retired at the age of 55, retirement never truly suited him. He continued consulting around the world for many years before he and Patsy finally settled in Weyburn, Saskatchewan in 2016. There, they embraced a slower pace of life, surrounded by wonderful friends and a community they were proud to call home.
Both of Dave’s sons built successful businesses of their own, a source of great pride for Dave and Patsy. Wade and Laura were blessed with two children, Joel (Jill) and Brittany (Keaton), who in turn blessed Dave and Patsy with two great-grandchildren, John and Poppy. Family was always at the centre of Dave’s life, and watching his sons and grandchildren build lives of their own was one of his greatest sources of pride.
Beyond his remarkable career, Dave will perhaps be remembered most for his incredible gift for storytelling. Dave had an astonishing memory. He loved to memorize poems, stories, and great works of literature. He could often recite them flawlessly from memory. Those recitations would often lead into captivating stories from his own life. Dave had a unique ability to make people smile and laugh and feel as though they had been part of the journey themselves.
Dave also had a remarkable ability to remember just about everything. He watched Jeopardy! religiously and seemed to know the answer to almost every question. He had a passion for all things boats and cars, and these were subjects he could happily talk about for hours. At home, Dave was known for his perfectly cut grass, and when winter arrived, he could often be found snowblowing his own property and much of the block. Dave took great pride in his garden, especially his tomato plants. Those tomatoes were a source of great satisfaction.
Dave will be deeply missed by his devoted wife, Patsy, sons; Wade (Laura) and Todd (Pam), his grandchildren; Joel (Jill) and Brittany (Keaton), his great-grandchildren, John and Poppy, and his siblings, cousins, extended family, and the countless friends and colleagues around the world.
