Donald Richard Poore

Donald Richard Poore, 79, of Harlingen, Texas, passed away peacefully on August 21, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, and friendship that touched the lives of all who knew him.

Born on April 27, 1947, in Berkeley, California, Donald was the son of Alva and Della Poore. Although he often returned to his beloved home state of California, he made the Rio Grande Valley his home for more than twenty years. During his time in the Valley, he built lasting friendships and became a beloved member of the Montemayor, Martinez, and Cruz families. Donald shared a special bond with the children of these families, all of whom loved him dearly. He was especially cherished by Kamryn Elise Solitaire ("Kami"), who lovingly called him "Grandpa," a title he treasured, and by Troy Taliancich, whom he affectionately called "Troy Boy." Throughout his life, he was known for his dedication to family, his faithful service to his country, and the enduring friendships he maintained over the years. Donald proudly served in the United States Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS Hancock from 1966 to 1970. Following his naval service, he continued serving his country in the Air National Guard and later worked as an air traffic controller, a profession that reflected his skill, responsibility, and commitment to public service.

For 22 cherished years, Donald shared his life with his loving partner, Maria del Rosario "Chayo" Cruz. Together, they built a life filled with companionship, joy, and devotion.

Donald will be remembered for his compassionate nature, unwavering loyalty to family and friends, and his ability to make everyone feel welcome and valued. His absence leaves a profound void, but his memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him.

Donald is survived by his life partner, Maria del Rosario Cruz ("Chayo"), and his sister, Shirley Richardson of Beryl, Utah. He also maintained close relationships throughout his life with his cousins, James Swift and JamiAnn Swift of Arlington, Texas, Patrick Chandler and Dean Allen Swindle of California.

Donald Richard Poore will be laid to rest at the Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission, Texas, on August 28, 2026, from 11:00 am to 11:30 am.

Donald will be deeply missed but never forgotten. His legacy of love, friendship, and kindness will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
