Dorothy Joan Scheyer

Born Dorothy Joan Hawkins on a ranch near Pendleton, Oregon on October 7th, 1930, to Joseph and Malinda Hawkins as the youngest of six children. Dorothy “JoAn” Scheyer went peacefully from this life into the next on August 13th, 2026, at her home in Salem, Oregon. JoAn was preceded in death by her Husband Harold, Niece Shelley Dahl, Foster Daughter Fay Aunspaugh and Son-in-Law Daniel Fontanini.

JoAn’s profession was a noble one; a housewife. She and Harold were blessed with four children, which she devoted her life to. After those four children, she gladly accepted into her household a niece, several foster children and any young person she thought could use some tender-loving care, which she gave out extravagantly. Her home always had an open door for anyone in need. Spending time with her extended family was one of JoAn’s greatest joys.

JoAn was a notoriously good game player who often schooled her family at cards or Scrabble. JoAn also excelled at Bridge, which she continued to play at a high level well into her 90s. She loved music, enjoyed spending time in her rock garden, grew some of the best tomatoes in the area, was an avid reader and always a good neighbor. She was once a dedicated quilter, bird watcher and an accomplished photographer who put much of her creative energy into cardmaking after Harold passed away in 2014. Many of us looked forward to receiving one of her beautiful hand-made cards on special occasions. JoAn also volunteered her time at the South Salem Senior Center.

Benjamin Scheyer of Seattle. Ronit Scheyer and Lisa Adams of Oregon City. Peter Scheyer of Washington D.C. Daniel and Kjirsten Scheyer of Brooklyn, NY. Bobby and Stefanie Sorenson of Everett, Washington. Great Grandchildren include Addy and Sam Sorenson of Everett, Washington. Hunter Brokaw of Mill City. Laney Tilgner of Silverton. McKenna Brokaw of Salem. Boaz Scheyer of Oregon City. Great-great grandchild Zion Tilgner of Silverton.
