Another soldier has gone home… It is with heavy hearts that Douglas Elwin Simpson, beloved husband, brother, uncle, brother-in-law and friend, passed away peacefully Tuesday, June 2nd. Doug is survived by his wife of 58 years, Angela, his sister, Angie Gilmer (Doug), sisters-in-law, Darlene Simpson, Gale Gilmer (Bryan), Margie Decker, nieces, and nephews, Scott Gilmer (Debbie), Steve Gilmer, Fred Simpson (Christina), Danny Simpson (Patsy), Randy Simpson, Donna Simpson, Billy VanWie (Lanie), Michelle Gunnells (Travis), Michael Decker (Tammy), Jason Gay (Amanda), Carlton Coker, Matthew Wynn (Kayleigh), Adam Wynn and a number of great nieces and nephews. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Geneva Simpson, brother, and sister-in-law, Don and Carol Simpson, and Gary Simpson. Doug was a Christmas baby, born December 25th 1944. He loved music, singing, teaching and serving in many areas of his church. He was a true servant, having taught teenagers as well as adults. He sang in the Cavaliers Quartet for a couple of years, singing in church services and homecomings around North Georgia. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and with the honor guard of the American Legion, playing taps at veteran’s funerals. He loved people-especially children and played Santa Claus at many churches and functions for the Downtown Cartersville Association and parade. His hobbies were manicuring his yard, woodworking and fishing in Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. After he and Angie retired, he ministered to Senior Adults at Lifepoint.
