George Steven Sakoulas, born September 19, 1923, passed away on August 27, 2026- just shy of his 103rd birthday.
To know Dad was to love him. He was a smart, sweet, gentle soul who believed that his secret to longevity was his reliable state of equanimity. A passionate historian, Dad was also a storyteller extraordinaire. Over the years he enjoyed reading, writing, the symphony, opera, sailing, and the warmth of the sun. Dad loved a good belly laugh, and will always be cherished for his sense of humor. (His thoughts for his obituary ran along the lines of: “If you’re reading this, the mythological god Zeus launched his thunderbolt at me…”) Yet more than anything else, Dad loved his children and grandchildren.
The son of Greek immigrants, Dad was born and bred in Kansas City, attending the Norman Grade School, Westport High School, and KCU (now UMKC). After additional education at Stanford through the military, Dad was fluent in five languages, and served as an interpreter during WWII. He later owned and ran a restaurant, and then worked in commercial real estate.
His wife, Goldie, preceded him in death two years ago. He is survived by their five children: Kimberly (Dan), Stacy (Pierre), Steven, Kristy (Werner), Byron (Christine), and 14 grandchildren and their families: Stacy/Bret/Willow/Cooper, Garrett, Grace/Larke, Hannah/Ryan/Griffin/Sullivan/Georgia, Samuel, Becker, Luke/Caris, Kyle, Nicole, Sophie, Addie/Clayton, Maya, Jake, and Grant.
There will be a visitation at 10:00 AM and a brief Greek Orthodox Trisagion Prayer at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 17th, 2026 at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, KCMO 64131. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to PBS or The Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, 12001 Wornall Road, KCMO 64145.
