Gwen Ellen Gardner

Gwen Ellen Gardner, 83, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2026, in Salem, Oregon.

Born on May 27, 1943, in Bozeman, Montana, Gwen was the daughter of Wayne (“Smokey”) Snyder and Bernice (Leischner) Snyder. She spent her childhood on the Snyder family ranch in Bozeman, where she created treasured memories alongside her siblings and extended family. Those early years instilled in her a deep appreciation for family, hard work, and the simple joys of life.

Gwen dedicated her professional life to public education, serving as a school finance director for several school districts throughout Oregon. She was highly respected for her knowledge, integrity, and commitment to serving students and their communities. Her leadership extended beyond her local districts through her involvement with the Oregon Association of School Business Officials (OASBO), where she served on the Board of Directors during the late 1990s. Although she officially retired in the early 2000s, her passion for the profession led her to continue working and mentoring others in school finance until 2017.

Outside of her career, Gwen found happiness in life’s quieter moments. She was an avid reader and enjoyed sewing, knitting, and baking. She will be especially remembered for the delicious pies and cinnamon rolls she lovingly prepared for family and friends, creating traditions and memories that will be cherished for generations.

Gwen was preceded in death by her parents, Wayne (“Smokey”) Snyder and Bernice Barney; her stepfather Ben Barney; her brother, Jerry Snyder; and her daughter-in-law, MaryLynn Zagyva Gardner.

She is survived by her son, R. Scott Gardner; her daughter, Trista Girt (Larry); four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, with one more eagerly anticipated; as well as many extended family members and dear friends who will miss her kindness, wisdom, and unwavering love.

Gwen’s legacy is one of dedication, generosity, and quiet strength. Whether through her lifelong service to Oregon’s schools, the warmth she brought to family gatherings, or the love she shared with those closest to her, she leaves behind a life well lived and a family who will forever treasure her memory.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Family and friends will be notified once arrangements have been finalized.
