Henry Nuttle, 86, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, surrounded by his family.
He was the beloved son of Elias W. and Mary E. Nuttle and is survived by his wife of sixty years, Heidi Nuttle; daughters, Christina Nuttle-Bumgardner and Eugenia “Gena” Nuttle; and four grandsons, Andrew “Davis” Stafford, Henry “Rhen” Bumgardner, Jon “Will” Felton, and Alexander “Alex” Bumgardner.
Born on November 29, 1939, in Denton, Maryland, Hank grew up on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. He attended Dickinson College, where he majored in mathematics and played lacrosse, graduating with honors. He earned a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from Johns Hopkins University. Hank married Heidi in 1965, and they moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, where he taught at North Carolina State University for 38 years.
Hank loved tennis, gardening, bridge, ballroom dancing, and traveling. He was a supporter of North Carolina Symphony and the Carolina Ballet. Hank was known for his kindness, integrity, and curiosity. He is remembered for his dedication to family, friendship, and his community.
A remembrance gathering will be held on June 4th at JC Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh, NC. Donations can be made to PBS North Carolina and the Interfaith Food Shuttle.
