James Robert Day

James Robert Day, 93, of Birmingham, AL, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, August 7, 2026. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Woodson Day and Dorothy Nell Day, his brother, John William “Bill” Day, and his wife, Rita Broomall Day.He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kristin and Phillip Landers, and grandsons Matthew Phillip Landers and Caleb James Landers, Birmingham.Mr. Day was born in Asheville, North Carolina. He attended Lee H. Edwards High School where he was a trombone player in the band and played basketball in an Asheville recreation league. After graduating high school, he attended the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill for two years before changing his major to Business and transferring to Western Carolina University where he was vice president of Future Business Leaders of America and selected “Who’s Who among American College Students.” After college graduation, he was drafted into the Navy where he served for two years in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Greece, Italy, and Gibraltar.After his military service, he worked in Atlanta, GA selling life insurance before taking a management position with the Chevrolet division of General Motors in Mobile, AL. He moved to Birmingham, AL in 1963 and met Rita Broomall Day in 1965. They subsequently married in 1968 and had one daughter, Kristin, in November of 1969.He came to faith in Christ later in life and joined Northlake Baptist Church in Gainesville, GA after he and Rita moved to Gainesville in 1998. In his sunset years, he loved hearing about his grandsons’ Cross Country races, school accomplishments, and enjoyed spending holidays with his daughter’s family.Funeral services will be held at the pavilion at the Alabama National Cemetery on Friday, August 14 at 11:00 a.m.Commemorative donations may be made to the Jimmie Hale Mission or Samaritan’s Purse.
