Juan Manuel Romero Sr.

Juan Manuel Romero, lovingly known as Johnny, passed away on July 30, 2026, at the age of 49. Born on March 15, 1977, and raised on Tucson’s west side, Johnny carried immense pride in being from Barrio Hollywood. It wasn’t just where he grew up—it was part of who he was. He loved his neighborhood, his community, and the people who helped shape him. No matter where life took him, the west side was always home.

Johnny graduated from Tucson High School in 1996 and spent his life building memories, friendships, and stories that will be shared for generations.

Those who knew Johnny will remember a man whose personality could fill any room. He had a one-of-a-kind sense of humor, an infectious laugh, and a talent for turning even ordinary moments into something memorable. He always had a joke ready, a funny comeback, or a story that would leave everyone laughing. Often, his laugh was just as funny as the joke itself, and once he got going, everyone around him couldn’t help but join in.

Johnny was a true movie enthusiast. Whether it was a brand-new release or a classic he’d seen dozens of times, he was always ready to talk about it. Family and friends knew they could count on Johnny to recommend a movie, quote a favorite scene, or spark a conversation that would quickly turn into a trip down memory lane. He loved sharing those moments and connecting with people through the stories he loved.

He found happiness in life’s simple pleasures: a backyard carne asada, good music playing in the background, a deck of cards on the table, throwing knives, watching sports, playing basketball and horseshoes, video games, flying kites, or sitting quietly birdwatching. A devoted Steelers fan, Johnny enjoyed every chance to gather with family and friends, laugh, tell stories, and enjoy the company of the people he loved most.

Life brought its share of challenges, but Johnny never let hardship take away his sense of humor or his appreciation for life. He met people with kindness, loyalty, and authenticity. He had a way of making others feel welcome, seen, and appreciated, and his presence brought comfort and laughter to those around him.

Johnny was a devoted father, brother, uncle, family member, and friend. He is survived by his son, Juan Manuel Jr.; his siblings, Barbara J. Valenzuela, Angelita Mejia, Ramon Mejia, Apolonia Santacruz, and Jessica Olivas; along with his nieces, nephews and great nieces, extended family members, and friends who will forever cherish the memories they shared with him.

He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Alexis D. Romero, and his mother, Connie “Chona” Romero.

One of the things those closest to Johnny will remember most was the way he ended conversations. He never wanted to leave without reminding people how much they meant to him. An “I love you” was almost always guaranteed, followed by the signature farewell that could only belong to Johnny: “Hell yeah, see you later, B*%$#%”

Though our hearts are broken by his loss, we take comfort in the laughter he gave us, the memories he created, and the love he shared so freely. Johnny’s spirit lives on in every family gathering, every movie quote, every joke that leaves a room roaring with laughter, every Steelers game, and every carne asada where loved ones come together.

We pray that his soul is wrapped in the love, peace, and warmth of our Lord. Though he is no longer with us in body, the joy, humor, and love he brought into this world will remain with us always.
