Larry Brewer, born November 11, 1942, in Wilmington, NC to Bernice Byrd Brewer and Hubert Brewer, peacefully and joyfully walked through the doors of paradise holding Jesus’ hand on May 7, 2026 at 83 years old.
Larry was preceded in death by his beautiful daughter, Tonice; his parents; his brothers Arnold, Bud, and Lennon; and his sisters Phyllis and Joyce.
He leaves behind the love of his life and devoted wife of almost 45 years, JoAnn Brewer; his children Wayne, Billy, Tina, Phyllis, Brad, Kim, and Scotty; many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and his brothers Terry and Jerry.
Larry was bigger than life — a proud family man, devoted husband, father of eight, Papa to many, and PopPop to RoLo. He was a loving son, brother, uncle, mentor, and inspiration to countless people. Known by many as a tough old Byrd and a stubborn Brewer, Larry carried a heart overflowing with compassion, loyalty, strength, courage, joy, and love.
He never met a stranger and somehow seemed to know everyone. Larry loved a good joke, was a legendary practical joker himself, and was known as the “knower of everything.” He spent his life encouraging others, cheering people on, and wanting everyone around him to succeed.
Larry proudly served his country in the United States Army as a boxer and infantryman and spent time stationed in Korea and Fort Benning. His life of service continued throughout his career in law enforcement. He served as Chief of Police in Phenix City, worked as a deputy with the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office for 28 years where he retired as First Sergeant, and also served as an officer in Kure Beach. Larry worked hard at his education, earning a Master's Degree in Criminal Justice long before it was common. He later shared his passion and knowledge of criminal justice as a professor at Shaw University in Wilmington.
Outside of work, Larry loved history, tree cutting, softball in his younger years, swimming, walking, driving through the woods, sharing stories of his youth, and taking rides around his beloved hometown of Wilmington. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family.
Per Larry’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service.
