Maria Elsa Montero, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2026, in Houston, Texas, at the age of 85. Maria was born on August 27, 1940, in Colón, Matanaza; Cuba to her loving parents, Jose Luis Betancourt and Felicia Abreu.
She carried with her the warmth, culture, and spirit of her homeland throughout her life. Maria was known for her deep love of cooking, creating meals that brought people together and filled homes with comfort and joy. A truly friendly and welcoming person, she had a special way of making everyone feel like family—earning her the affectionate title of “Mima.” Her kindness knew no bounds, and her gentle, positive nature left a lasting impression on all who met her.
She lived her life with happiness and energy, always finding reasons to smile and celebrate. Maria loved to dance, embracing music and movement as expressions of her joyful spirit. Above all, she cherished time spent with her grandchildren, who were the light of her life. Her love for them was boundless, and she delighted in every moment shared.
Preceded in death by her parents, Jose Luis and Felicia; husband, Adalberto; sisters, Georgina, Dahlia, Orquidia, Milka ; brother, Luis; and son-in-law Ramiro. She is survived by her two children, Yamilet and Jose Manuel; 5 grandchildren Jacquelin and her husband Benjamin, Jose and his wife Citlali, Julio, Jose Manuel and Jocelyn; great-grandchildren, Alexa, Ades and Andre, niece Milagro and nephew Luis.
Maria will be remembered as a kind, uplifting soul who always looked on the bright side of life. Her optimism, warmth, and caring heart will be deeply missed but forever treasured by those who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of love, laughter, and positivity will live on in the hearts of her family and all whose lives she touched.
