Mary Jo Coan

Mary Jo Coan, 72, of Olathe, Kansas, was born in Kansas City, Mo on July 31, 1953, to Betty and Lyle. She was one of six siblings: Carol, David, Terri, Tim, and Leslie. Mary Jo graduated from Bishop Hogan High School. Mary Jo died on May 4, 2026, at Olathe Hospice House, peacefully, as her warrior spirit allowed.

For 53 years, Mary Jo built a remarkable career in the medical insurance field, known for her proficiency, steady dedication, and the generosity she showed as an excellent mentor to others. She retired fully in 2025, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and care that was felt by colleagues and friends.

A devoted and accomplished bowler, Mary Jo was inducted into the Kansas City Women’s Bowling Hall of Fame for superior performance in 2003 and bowled two sanctioned 300 games during her bowling career. Her love for the sport extended well beyond the lanes through a lifetime of participating in bowling tournaments, where she formed countless friendships and brought her unmistakable spirit to every gathering.

Mary Jo was married to Mitch Coan for 34 years. She is survived by her two daughters, Jessica (Stephen) and Trisha (Ben), and her seven grandchildren: Makena, Remy, Andi, Desmond, John, James, and Titus. Her favorite times were spent in the kitchen baking with her grandchildren. She was very proud of each grandchild. Mary Jo loved sharing stories and photos of her grandchildren.

Mary Jo was a bowling fanatic, the biggest Chiefs fan ever, and a devoted supporter of KU basketball—while, begrudgingly, becoming a K-state grandma. She was a lover of classic rock and 80’s music, and a trivia expert in all movies and music. She enjoyed her monthly Bunko get-togethers, took pleasure in plastic canvas, and was unwavering in her hate of all things pickles and lover of all things chocolate. A devoted dog lover, she loved her dogs like she loved her children.

Beloved by many, Mary Jo had a way of making life brighter through humor that was equal parts warmth and sharp wit. Her storytelling could hold a room, and her sarcastic timing was often delivered with a knowing smile. Everywhere she went, she ran into someone she knew—a reflection of how widely she was connected and how generously she gave of herself in friendships built over a lifetime. Jo Jo had many, many friends. You know who you are, and she loved each one of you and the joy you brought to her life.

Many holiday traditions will continue on with her children and grandchildren, and many cherished memories will remain with her many work and bowling friends throughout the years. MJ will continue to be the butt of all jokes, as she would have expected.

We would like to thank every person that supported Mary Jo throughout her journey. Your kind words, cards, gifts, phone calls, and visits meant the world to her and lifted her spirit when needed the most. No words will ever be able to convey the gratitude her family has for each one of you. MJ, you will always be in our hearts. Thank you for the stories, memories, and laughs. You are so loved.

In lieu of flowers, the family would ask to send donations to the Greater Kansas City Youth Scholarship Fund. Checks payable to KCUSBC with Mary Jo’s name in the memo. This will support youth in bowling.
