Myra Hill Bryant

Myra Hill Bryant, 84, of Madison, Tennessee, passed away peacefully in Hendersonville, Tennessee, after a long illness. Born in Franklin, TN, she spent her early childhood on Gartland Avenue in East Nashville before making Madison— a community she loved and served with quiet, steady devotion—her cherished home.

Myra was a graduate of Madison High School and MacMurray College, where she cultivated a love of learning that never left her. She went on to teach high school Spanish and later substituted after her children were born. Those who knew her well realized that a trip anywhere in town was never a short one — it seemed she had touched the life of nearly every student she’d ever taught.

Myra was a woman who loved deeply and completely. Her greatest joy was her family — she poured herself into them with the same warmth and steadiness that defined everything she did. A lifelong learner at heart, she carried the same curiosity from her teaching days into every chapter of her life, whether she was losing herself in a good book, tracing her family’s early American roots through years of careful genealogical research, or tending her garden with a faithful Labrador Retriever close at her heels.

Music filled her world across every genre, though bluegrass held a special place in her heart. She remained a devoted supporter of local artists well into her eighties — the kind of person who showed up, who paid attention, and who believed that beauty in all its forms was worth celebrating. That spirit of generosity extended far beyond the music; it was simply who she was.

Myra gave generously of her time and spirit to her community, volunteering for years with C.O.P.E. in Springfield, Tennessee, and the Madison Church of Christ Benevolence Center. She also served as Recording Secretary for the local Daughters of the American Revolution chapter and carried that sense of legacy and heritage with her always.

Myra is survived by her husband, Marvin Bryant; her children, Ginny Howard (David) and William Smith (Shannon); her grandchildren, Zac Howard, Elijah Smith (Brinly), Caroline Lashlee (Luke), and Thomas Smith; her great-grandson, Ambrose; four siblings; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lois Virginia Hill and Thomas Hill, and her siblings, C.T. Hill and Lois Hill Davis.
