Olivia Velasquez

25 août 2026 Dignity Memorial

Olivia Rios Velasquez was born on April 30, 1959, in San Antonio, Texas, and was the beloved daughter of Maria de la Luz Ortiz and Marcos Salazar Ortiz. To those closest to her, especially within her family, Olivia was affectionately known as “Chucha” — a name that will forever carry the warmth and familiarity of home.

During her childhood, Olivia and her family eventually settled in Alief, Texas, where they put down roots, and where she would reside for the remainder of her life. Alief was more than simply the place she lived — it was home, and she was always proud to be from Alief.

Olivia was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Talamantez; her father, Marcos Salazar Ortiz; and her sister, Dora Elia Ortiz. She is survived by her mother, Maria “Mary” de la Luz Ortiz; her son, Marcus Talamantez; and her daughter, Jessica Talamantez.

Olivia was a loving grandmother to Destyne, Jazmyn, Abigail, and Railynn. She shared an especially close bond with her granddaughter Jazmyn, who was a loving and consistent presence in her life. She is also survived by her siblings, Irene Velasquez, Rose Velasquez, Rudy Velasquez, Sylvia Velasquez, Jesse Ortiz (Monica), Mark Ortiz (Gaby), and Mike Ortiz, along with their families; her many nieces and nephews; and her doggy grandson, Bronco Talamantez.

Olivia was remarkably strong, creative, and resourceful. She had a gift for seeing potential in things other people might overlook. She could take something that seemed ordinary, discarded, or no longer useful and imagine what it could become. In her hands, one person’s trash really could become another person’s treasure. Whether she was building, painting, repurposing, or simply creating something from an idea, she had a way of making something out of nothing.

Photography was a true part of who Olivia was. She was rarely without a camera, always ready to capture the people, places, and everyday moments around her. Through her photographs, she preserved pieces of life that might otherwise have passed unnoticed — moments that have now become treasured memories for the people she loved.

Olivia’s patience was matched by a quiet strength and a strong sense of who she was. She had her own mind, her own opinions, and she wasn’t afraid to stand firm in what she believed. The people who knew and loved her, knew that Olivia was going to be Olivia — genuine, strong-willed, and completely herself. That strength was part of what made her who she was, and it remained with her throughout her life.

Olivia was funny. She loved to joke and tease, and remarkably, she carried that sense of humor with her all the way to the end of her life. Even when illness had made her dependent on others for things she had once done herself, Olivia could still find an opportunity to make everyone laugh. While being cared for, she would jokingly call for backup and accuse her sister of being “too rough” or “pushing” her, only to laugh when everyone reacted. Even in an incredibly difficult season, she was still herself.

Perhaps one of the things that best reflected Olivia’s heart was the way she made room for people. Her family extended far beyond relatives. Her children’s friends became extended family to her, and those relationships meant a great deal to her. If someone was important to her children, they became important to her as well.

That love extended through generations. Olivia gave her time and attention not only to her children and grandchildren, but also to her nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She made people feel noticed, remembered, and included.

Olivia treasured the people who remained by her side throughout the different seasons of her life. Her sister-in-law and best friend, Janie Ortiz, held a special place in her heart. She also shared an extraordinary bond with her big sister, Irene Velasquez. Over the years, their sisterhood became a deep companionship — two sisters who walked through life alongside one another.

Her relationship with her mom, Mary, was equally important. She was a devoted daughter who helped care for her mother for many years. Even after Olivia became ill herself, her concern for her mom never disappeared. Caring for the people she loved was simply part of who she was.

Olivia’s faith was central to her life. She was a devout Catholic with a deep and unwavering belief in Jesus Christ. Her faith remained with her throughout her life and gave her comfort as she approached its final chapter.

Olivia’s life will continue through her children, her granddaughters, her family, her extended family, and the many people whose lives became intertwined with hers.

She will be remembered through the photographs she took, the things she created, the music she loved, the people she cared for, the opinions she never hesitated to share, and the laughter she could create even during life’s hardest moments.

There will be stories about Olivia that make her family laugh for years to come. Although those who loved her would have wanted more time with her, there is gratitude for the life she lived, the memories she created, the strength and love she showed, and the faith she carried with her.

May Olivia rest peacefully, reunited with those who went before her and held in the presence of the God she trusted throughout her life.
