Paul Alton DuBose of Salem, Oregon, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2026, at the age of 80. His passing followed a brief and rapid decline related to Parkinson's disease.
Paul was born on December 19, 1945, in Brownwood, Texas to Leslie and Marjorie DuBose. As a child, he moved with his family to Oregon, where he spent most of his life.
Starting in fifth grade, Paul worked picking berries, delivering newspapers, and working in a bakery to save money for college. After graduating from Hillsboro High School, he pursued a lifelong love of learning, earning multiple degrees including a bachelor’s degree in Statistics, master’s degrees in Mathematics, Statistics, and Software Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Statistics from Iowa State University.
In 1968, Paul was drafted into the United States Army. Although he was never deployed to Vietnam, his service included a year working with the Washington, D.C. police force.
In 1978, Paul married Laura Mullin, the love of his life. Together they built a family that brought him great joy. He became a devoted stepfather to Erin and father to Hilary, and later a proud grandfather to four grandchildren.
Throughout his career, Paul worked for both Fortune 500 companies and startup firms, applying his expertise in statistics, computer programming, and data analysis. His work took him to Germany, France, and Japan. He also shared his knowledge through several teaching roles, instructing college students in statistics, mathematics, and related fields.
Paul pursued his interests with characteristic enthusiasm and determination. He was especially passionate about health and fitness throughout his life. While in college, he earned brown belts in judo and karate and discovered a love of weightlifting that stayed with him for the rest of his life. In his 60s, he set multiple AAU American records in competitive weightlifting for his age and weight class. Remarkably, he was still bench pressing over 200 pounds at the gym just two months before his passing.
Paul is survived by his beloved wife of more than 45 years, Laura DuBose; his stepdaughter, Erin Fultz Fuimaono; his daughter, Hilary DuBose; and his grandchildren, Kyrin, Noble, Olympia, and Elowen. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Marjorie DuBose; his brother, David DuBose; and his sister Rachel Sullivan.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
Paul’s family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Salem Hospital for the compassionate and dignified care they provided during his final hours.
