Raymond David Gotlieb

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Raymond David Gotlieb, of Birmingham, Alabama, on June 30, 2026, just weeks shy of his 88th birthday.

Raymond was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, businessman, and community leader whose life was defined by hard work, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to family and community. A lifelong resident of Birmingham, he built a distinguished career in commercial real estate spanning more than five decades. In 1969, he founded Metropolitan Properties, Inc., serving as its president and guiding the company through decades of successful development, leasing, brokerage, property management, and consulting work. Raymond’s devotion to Birmingham led to the transformation of the city’s skyline. Throughout his career, Raymond earned the respectedCertified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM)designation and was the first individual in Alabama to achieve that honor. He served in leadership roles with numerous civic and professional organizations and contributed significantly to the growth and development of Birmingham's commercial real estate community.

Raymond attended both Vanderbilt University and the University of Michigan, where he studied business administration. His entrepreneurial vision, business acumen, and dedication to excellence earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues throughout Alabama and beyond.

More important to Raymond than any professional accomplishment was his devotion to those he loved. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Rosalie Gotlieb; his sister, Carole Simpson; his children, Laura Harkavy (Lee), Eve Lazarov (Craig), and Ryan Gotlieb (Marci); and his eight cherished grandchildren. He took immense pride in his family and found his greatest joy in celebrating their accomplishments, sharing meals and holidays, and creating memories that will endure for generations.

Those who knew Raymond will remember his wisdom, generosity, determination, sense of humor, and steadfast loyalty. He was a trusted friend, mentor, and advisor to many and left a lasting impression on all whose lives he touched.

Funeral services will be held at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham, Alabama, on Friday, July 3, 2026, at 11:00 a.m.

Shiva will be held at the Lazarov residence:Sunday, July 5, 2026, from 2:00 -4:00p.m. and 6:00-8:00p.m.Monday, July 6, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with Minyan at 7:30 p.m.
