Raymond Eli Cohen, a lifelong Montgomery businessman, family man, and friend to many, passed away Wednesday at the age of 95.Born on August 2, 1931, in Montgomery, Alabama, Raymond was the son of a pioneering Montgomery family. He graduated from Lanier High School with the Class of 1949 and later attended the University of Alabama. While pursuing his education, Raymond discovered that his greatest joy was working alongside his father in the family business, Cohen Amusement Company.In 1957, Raymond opened The Record Shop in Normandale Shopping Center. Through hard work, dedication, and a commitment to serving the Montgomery community, the business evolved into Cohens, a beloved local institution that proudly carried the family name beginning in 1988. For decades, Raymond built lasting relationships with customers and friends who became an extended part of his family.Raymond was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Miriam Franco Cohen, who passed away in 1998; his brother, Issac Cohen; and his sisters, Jeanette Rousso, Lena Levine, and Pauline Witt.He is survived by his wife, Kathie Cohen; his three sons, Michael Cohen and his son, Eli; Joel Cohen and his wife, Kristin, and their children, Hayley and Blake; and David Cohen and his wife, Amy, and their son, Will. Raymond is also survived by two great-grandsons Kain and Hyatt, as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.Raymond’s life was defined by devotion to family, dedication to his business, and a genuine love for the Montgomery community he called home for more than nine decades. His kindness, work ethic, and steady presence will be remembered by all.The funeral will be held on Friday August 21,2026 at Leak Memory Chapel 10AM. Visitation beginning at 9AM.In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Temple Beth Or, Agudath Israel Etz Ahayem Synagogue or to the Boy Scouts of America. The family would also like to express their appreciation to the caregivers of ACG Hospice and John Knox for compassionate care. His memory will live on in the family he loved, the business he built, and the countless lives he touched throughout his remarkable life.
