Robert Sumter Griffith II

19 août 2026 Dignity Memorial

Robert S. Griffith II, or Bob as he was more well known, passed away on Wednesday, August 19, 2026. Born on March 24, 1950, in Waynesboro, Virginia, he was named after his grandfather. He was a proud graduate of Washington and Lee University, graduating in 1972 with a degree in Journalism. He then moved to North Carolina, working for WPTF Radio in Fayetteville, NC and attending Campbell University’s new law school, graduating in 1980. He had a brief stint in politics, running for state senate in the early 80s, but ultimately supporting others. He started his own private law practice in the small town of Newton Grove, NC.

Love led him to the coast in 2000, where he fell even more deeply in love with the water and sailing upon it. He eventually ran a sailing charter boat, named after his daughter, the Kelly Allen.

He had a lifelong love for all kinds of animals, from cats and dogs to horses and goats. He used to occasionally refer to himself as the “gentleman farmer.” His most recent main love was his Boykin Spaniel Cooper, who crossed the Rainbow bridge earlier this year.

He was well known around Southport, from his time in the Cape Fear Yacht Club to his work with Provision Company on the Stede Bonnet Regatta for years. He was especially known around the bars and restaurants and will be dearly missed.

He is preceded in death by his mother Margaret Griffith and father Matthews Griffith. He is survived by his daughter, Kelly Griffith, of Clayton, NC; his sisters, Beverley Bigham (Bob) of Hanover, PA and Susan Griffith-Cooper of Durham, NC, multiple nieces, and a nephew.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers and gifts, please donate to Southport Cares (Home - Southport Cares) or the American Cancer Society (American Cancer Society).
