ROGER RAY SKEENS SR., 70, of Charleston, WV, went home to be with his lord on September 20, 2026 at 4:53 a.m., with his family by his side after a short illness at CAMC Memorial Hospital.
Roger was born January 12, 1956, in Charleston, Wv to the late Delmar Ray Skeens and Francis (Skeens) Jones.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 48 years, Dy-Anna Marie (Dee) Skeens and his brother Robert Wayne (Peewee) Skeens.
Those left to cherish his memory are his sons, Roger (Veronica) Skeens Jr. and Brian (Slena) Skeens; grandchildren, Kassidy (Brandon) Helmick, Faheem Churchill, Kimberly Cummings, Whittney (Chelsea) Barker, Nevaeh Cummings, Tabetha Barker, and Shiann Barker; and 11 great grandchildren. Three sisters, Deanna (Scott) Pauley, Patty Jones, and Vickie (Leo) Chapman along with many nieces and nephews.
Roger was a beloved employee of Kyle Furniture of 40 years before he retired and spent the remainder of his years just enjoying his golden years with his wife, caring for their home, and for a short while caring for his wife before her untimely passing. Afterwards he spent his time with his oldest son Roger and his wife Veronica, who cared for him with all their heart. Even hiring his grand daughter Nevaeh to watch him during the working hours so that he was not alone and always had company.
In his younger years he was an avid hunter and fisher. Stories can be told of fishing at Ruby Lake, and the times he went hunting with his sons. The many family adventures from his younger years and even stories of how his last few years on this earth were spent with his children trying to protect and love him unconditionally.
He was a wonderful father and husband, an even better grandpa and great grandpa. He would always smile when his loved ones walked in the room he was in while watching his westerns or Elvis Presley. You could even catch him singing if you turned on the right songs. He was an avid breakfast cooker and enjoyed doing so on Sundays for the longest time.
As he got older, he just enjoyed the company of his family and the conversation from all that came around. He was not the most talkative man, but you always knew when something was one his mind because he would not shy away from saying what he was thinking.
The memories he has provided us with will forever live on in our hearts and the blessings of getting to watch him grow older through the years. He will always be remembered as a strong, loving father and an amazing grandfather. While his family will miss him dearly, we found peace that day knowing that his suffering was over and after several years of hearing him say "where's mom", that he is finally reunited with his loving wife Dy-Anna Skeens. While we wish this time had not come so soon, he will live on forever in the hearts of those that knew and loved him.
Celebration of Roger's life will be 1 p.m. Monday, September 28, 2026 at Tyler Mt. Funeral Home with Pastor Mayford Witt officiating. Burial will follow in Tyler Mt. Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.
Gathering of family and friends will be from noon until time of service at the funeral home.
