Barbara Cherry, born in 1948 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, moved to Sarasota in 1970 and quickly became a steady, generous presence in both her community and her family.
After graduating from the University of Wisconsin, Barb built a successful career as C.E.O. of DePree Motels and stayed deeply involved in Sarasota, including work with the Downtown Association and helping spearhead the rehabilitation of the North Trail.
A dedicated philanthropist, she supported many charities and was the much-loved matriarch of a large extended family whose circle kept growing. Beyond her public contributions, Barb was the person friends and family could always count on—whether it was a listening ear at just the right moment, an act of service without being asked, or practical help during life's hardest chapters. She gave her time and energy freely, and no one who needed her ever had to ask twice.
Barb is survived by her son, Doug Cherry (and his wife Brooke), and her grandson, Ethan Cherry, as well as three younger brothers, one sister, seven nieces and nephews and an ever-growing number of grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
In keeping with Barb’s wishes, there will be no service.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to make a donation to Senior Friendship Center or All Faiths Food Bank in Barb’s memory.
Those who knew Barb will remember her with a smile and, in her spirit, keep the kindness going.
