Castora Rodriguez Lopez

Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Castora, passed away peacefully at home on June 7, 2026, at the age of 99.

Born in 1926 in Monforte, Spain, Castora’s life was defined by courage, perseverance, faith, and an unwavering devotion to her family. She married her beloved husband, Moises, and together they built a life rooted in hard work and sacrifice, eventually bringing their two sons, Jose and Manny, to Washington, D.C., where she would spend the remainder of her life.

Castora worked as a cook in restaurants and embassies throughout Washington until her retirement in 1987. Through her work, she shared not only her talent in the kitchen but also the generosity and warmth that became hallmarks of her character. A lifelong and devoted Catholic, she could often be found making her daily walk to St. Matthew’s Cathedral, where her faith remained a constant source of strength and comfort throughout her nearly century-long life.

Family was at the center of everything Castora did. She loved deeply and showed that love through her actions—through her care, her generosity, and the countless meals she prepared for those she cherished. She took immense joy in watching her granddaughters, Elicia and Sophia, grow up, and treasured the time she spent with them. She was especially delighted to celebrate Elicia and Parsa’s wedding in the Blue Ridge Mountains (infatuated by the cows as it was a familiar scene to her own childhood memories). She later welcomed her role as great-grandmother to Aydin and Izzy, a blessing that brought her endless pride and happiness.

Those who knew Castora will remember her remarkable strength, her resilience, and her gentle determination. They will remember the way she cared for others, her steadfast faith, and the traditions she lovingly preserved. They will also remember the foods that brought family together—her pulpo (octopus), Spanish bread, and homemade pizza, especially during the Christmas season when her kitchen became the heart of family gatherings.

Castora leaves behind a legacy of love, sacrifice, faith, and family. Though she will be deeply missed, her spirit lives on in the values she passed down, the traditions she created, and the generations who were fortunate enough to know and love her.
